O que o querido Johnny não contou foi que a parte dramática deu mais trabalho na tradução do que o antecipado! O filme tem um contexto político tão elaborado que até engole a ação em muitos momentos. Esse contexto é desenrolado no enredo pela morte da filha de Chan num atentado terrorista assinado por um grupo dissidente do IRA (será porque ninguém aguenta mais filmes ambientados na Guerra Fria?). Para efeito de tradução, o sotaque irlandês por si só já cria barreiras – no que fomos ajudados pelo roteiro. Foi necessário também entender melhor a história do IRA para fazer escolhas adequadas em relação a termos e tom para o filme.
Uma das escolhas mais interessantes para o filme foi a tradução do termo Chinaman. O termo dá nome ao livro que deu origem ao roteiro do filme, que acabou levando o título mais genérico de “O Estrangeiro” (The Foreigner). A troca de título é bem óbvia na sua intenção: não ofender ninguém antes mesmo de o filme começar. Como muito bem colocado pela crítica da Variety, o termo não tem equivalência alguma com outros rótulos de nacionalidade, como Britishman ou Frenchman. No entanto, o termo é usado largamente durante o filme, deixando o tradutor numa situação delicada. A decisão final foi utilizar duas opções de tradução: para os personagens pró-Chan, usamos “chinês”; já quando os anti-Chan o chamavam, era “china”.
