Ivan’s first job was as an assistant at a video rental shop (for those too young to remember, it’s like a hand-operated version of Netflix), where he’d watch an average of three movies a day. When he talked to clients, he’d strike up conversations to figure out their movie-watching profile and made recommendations based on that. These suggestions turned out to be on point and make him really popular with the customers.
A self-taught movie editor, once he got the hang of it, he started getting requests for all kinds of material – from institutional videos to sweet sixteens. This gave him an income while he was majoring in Film in the Audiovisual Studies program of the Federal University of São Carlos, in upstate São Paulo. Even though his undergraduate concentrations were screenwriting and direction, most of Ivan’s work has been in editing and post-production. That’s actually how he met his work colleague and life partner Ligia.
In Ivan’s opinion, the most interesting part of film and television is what is known as “suspension of disbelief”. In essence, this means not allowing any production mistakes to get in the way of the viewer’s experience – lest all the magic of movies and TV vanish into thin air. As post-production supervisor, his job is making sure this magic is safe from harm.
And Ivan sure knows about magic—his main hobbies are video games and board games. Among his favorites are the ones driven by strong plotlines. He loves traveling, especially if the route includes archaeological sites and ruins, a passion he got from his father, a History teacher. He likes to read all kinds of genres, and is always looking into new technologies that can be introduced as digital solutions for LBM’s processes.
